World Environment Day has been celebrated on June 5 every year since the United Nations Environment Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972, to raise awareness and take action around the world on environmental protection.
World Environment Day, which is celebrated under a different theme every year with the slogan "One World"; It was celebrated in 2022 with an emphasis on a sustainable, nature-friendly, cleaner and greener life.
Of course, the slogan of this important day is not the only situation that has changed since 1972. As we leave World Environment Day behind, let's take a look at what has changed in the environment:
The Alps are "going green"!
Snow cover has decreased significantly in 10% of the Alps, which provide 40% of Europe's drinking water.
Natural disasters due to climate change are increasing their impact day by day!
More than 10,000 people were left homeless in northeast Brazil due to the flooding and landslide disaster that occurred due to heavy rains that had been effective since 25 May, and about 100 people lost their lives.
Environmental pollution is becoming more dangerous than ever!
Related studies indicate that it directly or indirectly caused the death of 9 million people in 2019.
The sea level continues to rise day by day!
For example; Jakarta, one of the fastest sinking cities in the world, is sinking at a rate of around 25 centimetres per year due to groundwater overuse and sea-level rise.
Worldwide flora and fauna are disappearing!
According to a study published in the journal PloS ONE, the number of fish in unprotected areas of the Mediterranean is ten times lower than in protected areas.
