Berlin Turns the Lights Out!

As part of a national effort to conserve energy, Berlin has decided to turn off the lights of many monuments and historic buildings during the night, from Wednesday to Thursday each week, amid concerns about a lack of energy during the winter months. The senator responsible for the environment, mobility, and consumers in Berlin spoke about the need to use energy as efficiently as possible, considering the war in Ukraine.

Deaths due to heat waves in Europe

In many European cities, especially in the cities of Spain and Portugal, the temperatures are above 40 degrees for the day.

  • It is stated that more than 1700 people died in Spain and Portugal due to the summer heat on 7-18 July.
  • In England, where the temperature reached the highest level in the country's history, 13 people lost their lives when they entered the water to cool off.
  • On the other hand; Greece, Italy, France and Portugal are also struggling with forest fires caused by high temperatures, just like Turkey.

In addition, an ozone pollution warning was issued for 18-20 July for Europe struggling with extreme heat.

Combating Climate Change (!): Take Off the Tie, Turn Off the Air Conditioner!

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for savings against the rising energy prices after the Russia-Ukraine War in his press conference. Sanchez urged the public to save energy in high temperatures by not wearing ties. The Spanish government is making calls for the reduction of electricity consumption due to the use of air conditioning.

Music as a Renewable Energy Source!

The Newport Folk Festival both met the energy needs in an interesting way and offered a different concert experience to the participants of the festival. On the bicycle stage, the participants produced energy by pedaling. The audience, who turned the pedals, provided the opportunity to watch the concert from the front row due to the location of the bicycle stage.

On the other hand, at another festival, 100 common bottlenose dolphins were slaughtered.

In Denmark's Faroe Islands, 100 common bottlenose dolphins were killed this year during the annual Grindadrap festival. It is thought to be the highest number of common bottlenose dolphins killed in nearly 120 years. This species is protected under the directive of the European Union, but since the Faroe Islands are not a member of the European Union, they cannot be subject to any inspection or sanction.
